Most of us live and dance on the surface. I the shallowest waters. Away from the veil - we don´t see the veil, don´t know there´s something beyond it.
That´s not bad. Or good. It is what it is.
I, on the other hand, and a bunch of beautiful aliens I´m privileged to know, prefer to live and dance in the deepest waters. We´re Neptunian, unafraid of the dark, eager to savor the magic in our mouths, bodies, and souls.
We, the strange bunch, are aware of "Tarab" - and we claim it for ourselves.
The thousand-dollar question is: what the hell does "Tarab" mean?
Tarab is an Arabic word that roughly translates as transcendence, ecstasy, bliss, and "out of the body experience", anything that allows you to be beyond your physical body, a vehicle of reconnection to the soul.
I grab a cup of coffee and head to our backyard. The birds are singing and the sky´s shining. A light - velvety - wind blows in the fields surrounding me. I sit on the earth and feel its warmth. Then, as I like to do when I feel ungrounded, I close my eyes, breathe slowly, and take it all in: the sounds, the wind, the warmth, the energy; this presence.
There´s a moment of "Tarab", there.
As there is whenever I hold my man for a while, inside a deep-tight-heart-centered embrace.
As there is whenever I meditate.
As there is whenever I witness a moment of pure love.
As there is in an orgasm.
As there is every time I surrender in my dance or when I sing.
Now, the million-dollar question is: how do we experience "Tarab"?
Many know its meaning, intellectually. But few ever experience it. And although "Tarab" is a central concept in Egyptian Dance, Music, and Culture, the truth is that it remains a marginal and impossible-to-touch reality for most dancers.
This is why I´ve created "The Tarab Experience" - inviting two special guests to join this adventure with me, Mr. George Sawa, an Egyptian acclaimed musician, author, and teacher; and Sherifa Zuhur, a brilliant researcher, dancer, and author who has published some of the best books on Egyptian Dance and Culture.
