- Jasmine, ya madame. - The little girl shouted at me, dressed in a worn-out "gallabeya" and headscarf, in the middle of the overwhelming - never dull - Cairo traffic.

Usually, and for a reason I never understood, flower sellers would spray their bouquets with synthetic aromas that gave me headaches and nausea. Instead of allowing the flowers to speak for themselves - with their timid or loud scents -, they sprinkled them with chemicals.

Not that little girl. Out of choice or impossibility, she didn´t add a fake scent to her jasmine. She allowed it to be what it was.

I handed her a note and smiled to which she answered with a spicy hip twist and a wave of her hand. Then, I grabbed my jasmine bouquet and inhaled it.

Its scent was indeed natural. Light. So subtle I could hardly feel it. I had to close my eyes, focus on the inhalation, and feel. The world at large had to be left behind.

That subtlety, the one that requires our full presence and sensibility, was what turned that bouquet of jasmine into a bouquet of gold.

Not surprisingly, that´s how I learned about the nature of Egyptian Dance.

Although the current trend sells it as something loud, chemically-filled, plastic, competitive, and aggressive, Egyptian Dance is like that jasmine, untouched by chemical enhancers, delivered by a hip-twisting little girl in a blemished "gallabeya": subtle, natural, confident in the value of its simplicity, demanding our full presence and heart.

My hands will - forevermore - hold that bouquet of jasmine close to my heart. It guides me through dance and life.
