Om Kolthoum can change your life.
I know this is an ambitious claim but, I assure you, we can fulfill it.
As usual, I write/dance/teach from experience. The theory isn´t enough - it never was. I have to live to tell.
And I´ve been living it - this long-time love affair with the music of Om Kolthoum and its side effects.
Most Oriental dancers, from every level, associate the music of Om Kolthoum to a distant, out of reach, sophisticated world but my story with her music tells me otherwise.
Om Kolthoum can become your next-door neighbor, your biggest source of inspiration, your survival & thriving go-to secret weapon. Your soul sister from another place and time. Me, performing to Om Kolthoum, in Cairo, Egypt, with my orchestra
When I moved to Egypt to start living and performing there, I allowed her music to get under my skin through my shows, where I´d always dance at least one of her songs; with time, my world expanded and so did my connection with her; I connected with her music, deeper and deeper, through the experience of choreographing it, teaching it, singing it, listening to it, studying it, marveling at it, searching for answers in it. Through the intersection between her music and my life. Everybody´s life.
This is something Egyptians know, instinctively, and we, Westerners, can learn: the music of Om Kolthoum is the soundtrack of human experience. It can change the way you see and experience dance. And life.
How did she change my life?
I could write an entire book about it. For now, I´m sharing a few hints that I know can inspire you and guide you in the direction of your dance & personal greatness.
Ready to take off?
1. Om Kolthoum´s music has changed my life by providing a safe haven where I can return for a dance and a life rebirth.
Her music taught me what is Oriental Dance and it never fails to get me back on track whenever I feel lost, tired, or disoriented. I go back to it for creative and personal solace, healing, and magic.
2. Om Kolthoum´s music has changed my life because it showed me the importance of the soul. In dance, as in life.
I´ve been trained to focus on the physical world - my physical body, the physical reality that surrounds me, what my eyes can see, and what my hands can touch.
Om Kolthoum´s music reminded me there´s much more than what meets the eye. Her music showed me the meaning of Tarab, the power of emotion, humanity, the soul.
Never, ever since, did I ever returned to shallow dancing. Or living.
3. Om Kolthoum´s music has changed my life because it made me a better listener, therefore, a better communicator, lover, teacher, friend, person.
When you dive into Om Kolthoum´s music, you´re initiated into the fine Art of Deep Listening. That diving expedition changes you. It changes the way you dance - from follower to co-creator - and the way you listen and interact with the world around you.
Empathy, understanding of The Other, and Connection are a few of the consequences you experience.
Would I be the same dancer without what I call "Om Kolthoum´s University"? No way. Would I be the same person without it? Definitely not.
These are deep waters, baby, but, curiously, when you dive into them, you rise. One more, amongst the many miracles she has brought into my dance. And life.
